Au bord de la rivière est une pauvre maison,
Dedans sont trois fileuses qui chantent une chanson.
L'une s'appelle Claire, ses cheveux sont tout blonds,
Les deux autres sont brunes, Janeton, Margoton.
Le fils du roi qui passe les voit dans la maison :
"Bonjour, belles fileuses, pour qui votre chanson ?
- Elle est pour l'ami Pierre qu'épouse Janeton,
Et pour le beau Guillaume qu'épouse Margoton.
-Emmènerons donc Claire la belle aux cheveux blonds,
lui donnerons un royaume et puis l'épouserons.
- Ne veux point du royaume, j'aime mieux ma maison
Où je file la laine en chantant mes chansons."
On the riverside there's a poor house,
Inside are three spinners a-singing a song.
One is called Claire, her hair is quite blonde,
The other two are brunettes, Janeton, Margoton.
The king's son passes by and sees them in the house,
"Good day, beautiful spinners, who's your song for?"
"It's for our friend Pierre whom Janeton will marry,
And for handsome Guillaume whom Margoton will marry."
"We'll then take Claire away, the beauty with blond hair,
We'll give her a kingdom and then we'll marry her."
"I don't want the kingdom, I like my house better
Where I spin wool while singing my songs".
Notes
Janeton and Margoton are pet names for Jeanne (Jane, Joan) and Marguerite (Margaret). Pierre is Peter and Guillaume is William.
