Brave marin
Brave marin
Good Sailor
Chanson traditionnelle
Folk Song
(French)
(English)
Good sailor comes back from war,
Gently,
Good sailor comes back from war,
Gently,
Very ill-shoed, very ill-dressed,
"Good sailor, whence do you come back?"
Gently.
"Madam, I'm coming back from war,
Gently,
Madam, I'm coming back from war,
Gently,
Let some white wine be brought
That the sailor can drink passing by!"
Gently.
Good sailor started to drink,
Gently,
Good sailor started to drink,
Gently,
Started to drink and to sing,
The beautiful hostess [started] to weep,
Gently.
"Ah, tell me, beautiful hostess,"
Gently,
"Ah, tell me, beautiful hostess,"
Gently,
"Do you regret your white wine
That the sailor drinks when passing by?"
Gently.
"It's not my wine I regret,"
Gently
"It's not my wine I regret,"
Gently
But it's my husband's death,
Sir, you look like him!"
Gently.
"Ah, tell me, beautiful hostess,"
Gently,
"Ah, tell me, beautiful hostess,"
Gently,
You had three children by him,
Here are four of them now."
Gently.
"I received so many sad letters,"
Gently,
"I received so many sad letters,"
Gently,
"That he was dead and buried,
So I married again."
Gently.
Good sailor emptied his glass,
Gently,
Good sailor emptied his glass,
Gently,
Without saying a word, while crying
He went back to his ship.
Gently.
Notes
"In France the sailor is very seldom a soldier but some versions of the song do exist about a soldier (my mom used to sing one). The lyrics are the same except 'soldat' is used instead of 'marin' and 'régiment' instead of 'bâtiment' at the very end.
In Canada the sailor is a soldier. In those versions, the soldier may get angry at the end, sometimes so angry that he kills his wife and children." -Monique Palomares
