Angela shared this jump rope rhyme with us that she learned in Newburgh, New York.

Bluebells, Cockleshells - American Children's Songs - The USA - Mama Lisa's World: Children's Songs and Rhymes from Around the World - Intro Image

Notes

*Speed up turning the rope while jumping to see what number you get to.

Here's another version that you can listen to here....

Bluebells, cockleshells,
Eevie ivy over,
My mother said that I was born...
January, February, March, April,
May, June, July, August...
1, 2, 3, 4...

It was the intro to a rope-skipping chant.

Bluebells, Cockleshells
Evey, Ivy, Over.
Down in the valley where the green grass grows
There sat 'Dianne' sweet as a rose
Along came 'Rolly' and kissed her on the cheek
How many kisses did she get that week?

Then the jump roping participants would start counting the number of successful jumps.

The first lines had us just rocking the rope back and forth for the jumper to jump over. On the word 'Over' then we'd start swinging the rope over the jumper's head.

Thanks for that fun memory! -Dianne"
