Vo Luzern uf Wäggis zue
This is a yodeling song about taking a boat trip in Switzerland from Lucerne to Weggis.
Yodeling began as a way of communicating over long distances in mountainous regions. It's believed that people as early as the Stone Ages yodeled! Yodeling songs developed later and originally had no words, only sounds. In the 19th century, yodeling songs with lyrics became popular in the Swiss Alps, especially in the 1830's. This song was written in 1832.

Vo Luzern uf Wäggis zue,
Holje-guggu, holje-guggu,
brucht me weder Strümpf noch Schueh,
Holje-guggu, holje-guggu...
Hoduliduli hopsassa holje-guggu, holjeguggu,
Hoduliduli hopsassa holje-guggu-guggu.
Fahr im Schiffli übern See,
Holje-guggu, holje-guggu,
um die schönen Maidli zseh.
Holje-guggu, holje-guggu...
Hoduliduli hopsassa holje-guggu, holjeguggu
Hoduliduli hopsassa holje-guggu-guggu.
Hansli, trink mer nit zu viel,
Holje-guggu, holje-guggu,
's Gäldli mueß verdienet si.
Holje-guggu, holje-guggu...
Hoduliduli hopsassa holje-guggu, holjeguggu
Hoduliduli hopsassa holje-guggu-guggu.
Maidele, laß das Gambele go,
Holje-guggu, holje-guggu,
's Gambele wird dir scho vergoh,
Holje-guggu, holje-guggu...
Hoduliduli hopsassa holje-guggu, holjeguggu
Hoduliduli hopsassa holje-guggu-guggu.
From Lucerne to Weggis,
Ho lay hoo hoo, ho lay hoo hoo,
Neither stockings nor shoes are needed.
Ho lay hoo hoo, ho lay hoo hoo...
Yodel ye oodee hopsassa ho lay hoo hoo, ho lay hoo hoo,
Yodel ye oodee hopsassa ho lay hoo hoo, hoo hoo.
One crosses the lake on a boat,
Ho lay hoo hoo, ho lay hoo hoo,
To see the pretty girls
Ho lay hoo hoo, ho lay hoo hoo...
Yodel ye oodee hopsassa ho lay hoo hoo, ho lay hoo hoo,
Yodel ye oodee hopsassa ho lay hoo hoo, hoo hoo.
Johnny, don't drink too much,
Ho lay hoo hoo, ho lay hoo hoo,
Money must be earned.
Ho lay hoo hoo, ho lay hoo hoo...
Yodel ye oodee hopsassa ho lay hoo hoo, ho lay hoo hoo,
Yodel ye oodee hopsassa ho lay hoo hoo, hoo hoo.
Young girl, don't jig about so much,
Ho lay hoo hoo, ho lay hoo hoo,
You'll get over jigging,
Ho lay hoo hoo, ho lay hoo hoo...
Yodel ye oodee hopsassa ho lay hoo hoo, ho lay hoo hoo,
Yodel ye oodee hopsassa ho lay hoo hoo, hoo hoo.
