Notes

*In some versions, the groom is the prince of Spain (principe di Spagna) or the king's son of Spain (figlio del re di Spagna).

**"Viole" can refer to pansies or violets.

Game Instructions

The children walk in a circle. One child is outside the circle, walking in the opposite direction, he's the king's squire and starts singing, the children in the circle answer. When the "king's squire" is allowed in, he picks a child who follows him around the outside of the circle and the game starts all over again till there are no more children to choose from.

Alternate game instructions: Another child is standing in the middle of the circle acting as Madama Dorè and answers the "king's squire" and allows him into the center of the circle or not according to the song lyrics.

Comments

There's a shorter version of this song that doesn't include the chimney sweep part.
