Tente, baba, tente
Sleep, Baby, Sleep
Lullaby
Lullaby
(Hungarian)
(English)
Tente, baba, tente,
a szemedet hunyd be.
Aludj, ingó-bingó,
kicsi rózsabimbó.
Alszik az ibolya,
csicsíja babája.
Sleep, baby, sleep,
Close your eyes.
Sleep, tilting-lilting*
Little rose bud.
The violet is sleeping,
Sleep, baby.
Notes
*Zsofia wrote that Ingo-bingo is a nonsense phrase.
However, Csilla from Hungary wrote: "The phrase 'ingó-bingó' is actually not a nonsense phrase. 'Ingó' means tilting, or swaying, and it refers to the little rose bud tilting or swaying. 'Ingó-bingó' is a phrase where the meaningful part is repeated with a slight variation, therefore have we the 'bingó' part. (This could mean the game bingo as well, but not in this context :P :D) This is similar to words like 'hugger-mugger', 'topsyturvy', 'hurly-burly', 'helter-skelter', or 'hubble-bubble' in English, I think. So the English translation of the lines 'Aludj, ingó-bingó, kicsi rózsabimbó' would be something like 'Sleep, tilting-lilting, little rosebud'. "
