We are One, Two, Three, Good Hearty Lads
Souling was a tradition for singers to go from house to house anywhere from October 31st to November 2nd (All Souls Day). The "soulers" would sing songs and be given money or food in return.
Originally, the singers were singing for soul cakes in remembrance of the dead.
Derek wrote: "I would have been about 8 years old when I started singing these songs, we used to save the few penny's we collected to buy sparklers and fireworks on "Bonfire Night" better known as "Guy Fawkes" on November 5th."
We are One, Two, Three, Good Hearty Lads
Souling Song
We are one, two, three
Good hearty lads
And we're all in one line,
And we've just come a Souling
Good nature to find,
And it's all that we're Souling for
Is your money and kind words,
Step down in your cellar
And see what you can find,
There are apples and oranges
And all sorts of wine.
