Notes

The Following is from "What They Say in New England: A Book of Signs, Sayings, and Superstitions" (1896) by Clifton Johnson:

"Look at the moon some night and say, -

'I see the moon, the moon sees me;
The moon sees somebody I want to see.'

Then name the person you wish to see, and in a day or two you will see that person."

Here's part of a version attributed to Meredith Willson (1953). It's often sung as a lullaby:

I see the moon; the moon sees me
Under the shade of the old oak tree.
Please let the light that shines on me
Shine on the one I love.

Over the mountains, over the sea,
Back where my heart is longing to be,
Please let the light that shines on me
Shine on the one I love.
