Jolly Boy
Nyango sent me this song with the note: "I first saw this song when I was hospitalized and spent Christmas at the hospital. I was about 9 years old then. The hospital staff put on a show for the patients. The guy doing this song padded his tummy so it was quite big. Then he walked out on stage and started singing:"
Jolly Boy
Children's Song
My belly is big and I cannot walk
And I want to go to my home.
They tell me: (starts doing the twist here)
"Come back, come back-O!
Jolly Boy, come back come back, O! Jolly boy!"
Audience joins in: "Come back, come back O!"
Actor: "Jolly boy!"
Audience joins in: "Come back, come back O!"
Actor: "Jolly boy!"
Notes
Nyango said, "We often say 'belly', 'stomach' or 'tummy' in Cameroon interchangeably. In fact, in Pidgin English, 'belly' is the word we use for the tummy. When the audience joins in the song, they also clap to the beat!"
Many thanks to Nyango M. Nambangi of the Minnesota African Women's Association for contributing this song and for singing it for us.
