I Won't Be My Father's Jack
I Won't Be My Father's Jack
Nursery Rhyme
I won't be my father's Jack*,
I won't be my father's Jill**;
I will be the fiddler's wife,
And have music when I will.
T'other little tune,
T'other little tune,
Prithee, Love, play me
T'other little tune.
Notes
*Jack can refer to a peasant or be the generic name for a lad - sometimes with a derogatory connotation like a knave.
**Jill is sometimes used as the female equivalent of Jack in the sense above - the generic term for a lass. It too can have a derogatory meaning, like wench.
