Two Little Dogs Were Basking in the Cinders
Two Little Dogs Were Basking in the Cinders
Nursery Song
Two little dogs were basking in the cinders;
Two little cats were playing in the windows;
When two little mice popped out of a hole,
And up to a fine piece of cheese they stole.
The two little dogs cried, "Cheese is nice!"
But the two little cats jumped down in a trice*,
And cracked the bones of the two little mice.

Here's another version from Traditional Nursery Songs of England with Pictures by Eminent Modern Artists edited by Felix Summerly (1843):
Three little dogs were basking in the cinders;
Three little cats were playing in the windows;
Three little mice popped out of a hole,
And a piece of cheese they stole.
The three little cats jumped down in a trice,
And cracked the bones of the three little mice.
