I Had a Little Nut Tree
I Had a Little Nut Tree
Nursery Rhyme
I had a little nut tree,
Nothing would it bear,
But a silver nutmeg,
And a golden pear.
The King of Spain's daughter
Came to visit me,
And all for the sake
Of my little nut tree.
I skipped over water,
I danced over sea,
And all the birds in the air,
Couldn't catch me.
Notes
James Orchard Halliwell's theoroized in his book The Nursery Rhymes of England (1843) that the "King of Spain's daughter" in this rhyme may be Juana La Loca of Castile (called Joanna The Mad). She visited Henry VII in 1506. Joanna was considered too mentally unstable to run the government of Spain, even though she was legally the Queen for many years.
Here's a painting of Joanna of Castile (1479 - 1555)...
