Notes
Ladymelisse Nambangi wrote, "Just a quick note to let you know that the "ham" in the Sweet banana song is actually said as an enjoyable "biting sound".Children actually make a chomping down on a banana motion when the sing this part. So, "ham" in this song is an onomatopoeia, not "ham" as in the produce. It's the Cameroonian equivalent of the American 'yum' said in appreciation of food :-). In fact, Cameroonians rarely use the word ham (nor bacon, for that matter) for any piece of pork, especially since we eat just the fresh pork."
Ladymelisse continued, "'Sweet banana' actually refers to the taste of the banana. That is, banana that is sweet = banane douce. And to tell you the truth, our Molyko bananas (grown in the plantations of Molyko town in Cameroon) are the sweetest ever :-)."
Thanks and Acknowledgements
Many thanks to Ango Fomuso Ekellem for contributing this song and to Ladymelisse Nambangi for her explanation of the meaning of the word "ham", and about bananas, in Cameroon.
Thanks so much!
