The Christmas carol "O Christmas Tree" comes directly from the German song called "O Tannenbaum".
"O Tannenbaum" was written in 1824 by Ernst Anschütz. It literally means "O Fir Tree" and is not about Christmas but about how the evergreen is a symbol of hope and constancy.
Anschütz based his text on a 16th-century Silesian folk song by Melchior Franck called, "Ach Tannenbaum". He even kept the 1st verse of the original song and added 2 verses of his own.
This lovely song has traveled throughout the West. In some cases just the melody was used to form a song.
