A la puerta del cielo
This lullaby is from the 16th century.
A la puerta del cielo
At the Gates of Heaven
Canción infantil
Lullaby
(Spanish)
(English)
A la puerta del cielo
Venden zapatos
Para los angelitos
Que andan descalzos
Duérmete niño
Duérmete niño
Duérmete niño
Arrú arrú
A los niños que duermen
Dios los bendice
A las madres que velan
Dios las asiste
Duérmete niño
Duérmete niño
Duérmete niño
Arrú arrú
At the gates of heaven,
They sell shoes
For the little angels
That go barefoot.
Sleep baby,
Sleep baby,
Sleep baby,
Hush-a-bye now.
The children who sleep,
God bless them.
The mothers who watch,
God helps them.
Sleep baby,
Sleep baby,
Sleep baby,
Hush-a-bye now.
Notes
Here is another verse found in "Cantos populares españoles" by Francisco Rodríguez Marín (1882):
A tôs los niños güenos* (All the good children)
Dios los bendice (God bless them)
Y á los que son malos (And to the ones who are naughty)
Les da lombrices. (He gives them worms.)
*tôs (sic) is "todos", güenos is "buenos".
"lombrices" here are intestinal worms.
I respected the original spelling though one edition gives "á" in the 3rd line and another spells it "a" without the accent. – Monique
