Gugalaí-gug, mo chircín dubh,
Suíonn sí síos is beireann sí ubh
Ubh inné is ubh inniu,
Gugalaí-gug, mo chircín dubh.
Guggly-gug, my little hen black,
Sits she down and lays she an egg:
An egg yesterday and an egg today
Guggly-gug, my little hen black.
Notes
"In the Munster dialect, the word for today – inniu – rhymes with the word for black - dubh (a bit like the English word dove) and it used to be written with a bh (v sound) at the end of it. Usually in Irish the verb comes first."
