(French)
(English)
Laquelle marierons-nous ?
Dans ce joli jardin d'amourettes,
Laquelle marierons-nous ?
Dans ce joli jardin d'amour,
Dans ce joli jardin d'amourettes,
Dans ce joli jardin d'amour.
Mademoiselle, ce sera vous.
Dans ce joli jardin d'amourettes,
Mademoiselle, ce sera vous.
Dans ce joli jardin d'amour,
Dans ce joli jardin d'amourettes,
Dans ce joli jardin d'amour.
Lequel lui donnerez-vous ?
Dans ce joli jardin d'amourettes,
Lequel lui donnerez-vous ?
Dans ce joli jardin d'amour,
Dans ce joli jardin d'amourettes,
Dans ce joli jardin d'amour.
Monsieur, ce sera vous.
Dans ce joli jardin d'amourettes,
Monsieur, ce sera vous.
Dans ce joli jardin d'amour,
Dans ce joli jardin d'amourettes,
Dans ce joli jardin d'amour.
Amour, saluez-vous !
Dans ce joli jardin d'amourettes,
Amour, embrassez-vous !
Dans ce joli jardin d'amour,
Dans ce joli jardin d'amourettes,
Dans ce joli jardin d'amour.
Amour, retirez-vous !
Dans ce joli jardin d'amourettes,
Amour, retirez-vous !
Dans ce joli jardin d'amour,
Dans ce joli jardin d'amourettes,
Dans ce joli jardin d'amour.
Which one will we marry
In this pretty garden of flirtation?
Which one will we marry?
In this pretty garden of love,
In this pretty garden of flirtation,
In this pretty garden of love.
Miss, it will be you
In this pretty garden of flirtation,
Miss, it will be you
In this pretty garden of love,
In this pretty garden of flirtation,
In this pretty garden of love.
Which one will you give her?
In this pretty garden of flirtation,
Which one will you give her?
In this pretty garden of love,
In this pretty garden of flirtation,
In this pretty garden of love.
Sir, it will be you
In this pretty garden of flirtation,
Sir, it will be you
In this pretty garden of love,
In this pretty garden of flirtation,
In this pretty garden of love.
Love, bow to each other!
In this pretty garden of flirtation,
Love, kiss each other!
In this pretty garden of love,
In this pretty garden of flirtation,
In this pretty garden of love.
Love, withdraw
In this pretty garden of flirtation,
Love, withdraw
In this pretty garden of love,
In this pretty garden of flirtation,
In this pretty garden of love.
Notes
Jérôme wrote, "First of all, this is a traditional French song that was taken up in Quebec and all of French Canada and recorded in the 50's by Jacques Labrecque. Besides being a circle dance performed in a group, it was also called a kissing or marriage round, then often sung during celebrations around weddings or during parties between adults in a spirit of seduction. After walking around hand in hand, the circle goes back to a central point where future lovers can exchange kisses.
It's also a call-and-response song. It's very popular in Quebec. The dancers repeat all the verses together, which makes it a very inclusive song."
