Terezinha de Jesus
Terezinha de Jesus
Little Theresa of Jesus
Children's Song
Children's Song
(Portuguese)
(English)
Terezinha de Jesus,
Deu uma queda foi a chão.
Acudiu três cavalheros,
Todos três chapéu na mão.
O primeiro foi seu pai,
O segundo seu irmão,
O terceiro foi aquele
Que a Tereza deu a mão.
Terezinha levantou-se
Levantou-se lá do chão
E sorrindo disse ao noivo
Eu te dou meu coração.
Da laranja quero um gomo,
Do limão quero um pedaço,
Da morena mais bonita,
Quero um beijo e um abraço.
Little Theresa of Jesus
Fell down on the ground.
Three gentlemen came to her rescue,
All three hat in hand.
The first one was her father,
The second was her brother
The third was the one to
Whom Theresa gave her hand.
Little Theresa rose,
She rose from the ground
And, smiling, she said to her sweetheart
"I give you my heart."
From the orange I want a segment,
From the lemon I want a piece
From the prettiest brown skinned girl
I want a kiss and a hug.
Notes
I asked Ana Ruellon from Portugal if she knew who Little Theresa of Jesus is. Here's her reply:
"I think this song must be Portuguese... It seems familiar to me. It may be an ancient song.
This Terezinha de Jesus is Thérèse of Lisieux or Saint Thérèse of the Infant Jesus (from France) and in my comprehension the third man should be Jesus himself, for as a nun, she would be his wife."
