This song is one of the best-known German children's songs. The lyrics were written by Ernst Anschütz (1780 – 1861) to the tune of an older folk song. It was published in 1824.

There's a Japanese version of this song called 小ぎつね or 小ぎつねこんこん (Little Fox) by Yoshio Katsu that was published in a Japanese 3rd grade textbook in 1947.
