Išli pani na hrušky
Išli pani na hrušky
Men Went to Gather Pears
Hand Clapping Rhyme
Hand Clapping Rhyme
(Slovak)
(English)
Išli pani na hrušky
podriapali kožušky
povešali na vráta
popadali popadali popadali do do do bláta.
Men went to gather pears
They ripped their fur coats
They hung them on the gate
They fell, they fell they fell into, into, into the mud.
Notes
Hana wrote,
"pani" = men, "panie" = women
kožušky - coat, fur
podriapali - means scratched but in this story maybe both is possible (scratched and ripped), because many Slovak people know the other version where there are CATS (kočky) instead of women and in the end came the tinker (drotár) and he helped them with the wire to repair it. Here's that version:
Ťap, ťap ťapušky
Ťap, ťap, ťapušky,
išli mačky na hrušky,
podriapali kožúšky,
povešali na vráta,
príde drotár, popláta.
English Translation:
Pat-a-cake, Pat-a-cake
Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake
The cat went to pick pears
He ripped his fur coat
He hung it on the gate
The tinker helped mend it.

Many thanks to Hana Cice for contributing this rhyme and for translating it, for the notes and the second version. Thanks also to Jakub for fine-tuning the first translation.
