L'as-tu vu ?
The English translation is singable to the tune.
L'as-tu vu ?
Did You See?
Chanson de Noël
Christmas Carol
(French)
(English)
L'as-tu vu, l'as-tu vu ?
Le petit bonhomme, le petit bonhomme.
L'as-tu vu, l'as-tu vu,
Le petit bonhomme au capuchon pointu ?
Il s'appelle Père Noël,
Par la cheminée, par la cheminée,
Il s'appelle Père Noël,
Par la cheminée, il descend du ciel.
Il apporte des joujoux,
Il en a plein sa hotte, il en a plein sa hotte,
Il apporte des joujoux,
Il en a plein sa hotte et c'est pour nous !
Did you see? Did you see,
The little, dear chap, the little, dear chap?
Did you see? Did you see,
The little dear, chap with the pointed hat*?
His name is Santa Claus,
He comes down the chimney, he comes down the chimney.
His name is Santa Claus,
He comes down the chimney, he comes down from the sky.
He brings us sweets and toys**,
His bag is full of them, his bag is full of them,
He brings us sweets and toys,
He has a bagful for girls and boys.
Notes
*A "capuchon" is a hood. We translated it to "hat" since "hood" doesn't rhyme with "chap" at the end of the 4th line. The normal version actually goes "au chapeau pointu" (with the pointed hat).
**Joujou is old-fashioned baby-talk for toy.
*****
Literal Translation
Did you see him, did you see him?
The little chap, the little chap,
Did you see him, did you see him?
The little chap with the pointed hood.
He is called Father Christmas,
Thrugh the chimney, through the chimney,
He is called Father Christmas,
Through the chimney, he'll come down from the sky.
He brings toys,
He has a bagful of them, he has a bagful of them,
He brings toys,
He has a bagful of them and they're for us.
