Did you see the cap, the cap?
Did you see the cap of old man Bugeaud?
Yes, I saw the cap, the cap,
Yes, I saw the cap of old man Bugeaud.
It's made of, the cap, the cap,
It's made of camel's hair.
Notes
Marshal Bugeaud was a French army officer (marshal) who took part in the conquest of Algeria in the 19th century. The story goes that one night during the conquest of Algeria in the mid 1800's Marshal Bugeaud was woken up by an Algerian attack and went out of his tent to fight with his night cap on. Another story goes about Marshal Bugeaud giving his own cap to a soldier who had lost his during a previous attack. The soldier then took a flag from the Algerians instead of the burnoose (hooded cloak) he was asked to bring back, gave Bugeaud his cap back and was rewarded a cross.
