This group of songs with musicians playing instruments are rooted in the German Grimm's fairy tale called, "Der wunderliche Spielmann" (The Wonderful Musician).
The first musical version seems to have been published in London, England in 1871 and was called, "The Wonderful Musician" written by Walter Greenaway. The song is also known in Germany as "Ich bin ein Musikante" and adapted in the US to "I Am a Fine Musician." Here are those versions along with others in different languages...
