Le livre "The Singing Game" (1985) de Iona et Peter Opie donne la plus ancienne version imprimée de cette chanson comme suit, comme on peut la trouver dans "Mother Goose's Quarto" (Boston, 1825):

Cows in the corn-field, run boys run;
Cats in the cream-pot, run girls, run girls;
Fire on the mountains, run boys run.
