As I Was Going by Charing Cross
As I Was Going by Charing Cross
Nursery Rhyme
As I was going by Charing Cross,
I saw a black man* upon a black horse;
They told me it was King Charles the First;
Oh, dear! my heart was ready to burst!
Notes
*According to The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes, edited by Iona and Peter Opie (1951), "a black man" at that time meant that the man had black hair.
