James Orchard Halliwell's theoroized in his book The Nursery Rhymes of England (1843) that the "King of Spain's daughter" in this rhyme may be Juana La Loca of Castile (called Joanna The Mad). She visited Henry VII in 1506. Joanna was considered too mentally unstable to run the government of Spain, even though she was legally the Queen for many years.
